There is no doubt that modern airports are high-tech hotspots. An unimaginable number of different systems are installed and somehow intertwined with each other: passenger check-in, baggage tracing, flight information, terminal surveillance, runway lighting, apron coordination and, probably most important, air traffic control (ATC), to name just a few. And now it seems that everything is going over IP!
As if this were not enough complexity, the enormous size of an airport campus adds extra challenges: the distances in large terminal buildings and even in kilometers of runway installations need to be bridged.
So, the huge mass of data created by the many systems must be collected and processed and then transmitted over long distances. Additionally, most of the data is highly critical - nobody wants the ATC system to crash!!!
